Photo Essay:
E.S. Reflection:
After experiencing this complex and interesting project there have been some aspects/ events that have definitely stood out to me. I enjoyed the field trip portion of the Envisioning Somerset Project because it was a switch from the usual classroom environment with Digital Photography. Instead of taking photos and learning about the history of Somerset on our own we actually got to experience the history of Somerset from a first hand source on the field trip. Mary-Ann MacDonald was the historian that joined us on our Field Trip who provided us with the detailed accounts of Somerset’s history. I thought that the history provided by Mary-Ann and the connections with the historical sights along the field trip were very interesting. The connections made me feel like I was going back in time and witnessing the true history right before my eyes. I also liked the final portion of the project and witnessing the final product. Heading to the Art Gallery and seeing how all of the information found is connected in a certain way really makes me proud of my classmates and I. Once the Art Gallery was complete and contained a chronological account of Somerset and Berkley’s past it really brought the whole project together and made it seem as if we had finally completed a journey that had taken forever to complete. If there were another opportunity provided for my class and I to do this project all over again I would definitely do it.
Photo Emulation:
Photographer Information:
*My Photographer is Martin Schoeller
*Matin was born in Munich, Germany but moved to New York City, NY to become a New York based photographer. He was born on March 12th, 1968 and is still alive to this day.
*My Photographer's main subject matter is of people
* Martin takes portrait photos for big magazine brands like GQ, Time, Vogue, New York Time Magazine, The New Yorker, and National Geographic Magazine since 1999.
*I chose this artist because I like his specific portrait photo of Steve Carell with tape all over his face.
Technical Aspects of the Photograph:
*The lighting is coming from straight ahead and it captures the whole subject matter with the background as well.
*The photo s mostly lit up although there are some dark spots in the background from where the subject matter blocks the light.
*I feel like the photo is evenly exposed, not too dark, not too light.
*The photo is in focus.
*The Photographer doesn't use shutter speed but does incorporate a shallow DOF to make the subject matter in focus.
Composition:
*The POV is straight on.
*The Photograph is balanced except for the tape uneven tape roll on the side of his face.
*The photo does meet the guidelines of rule of thirds
*There is a clear focal point on the subject's face
*It is taken from a vertical orientation and I think that it captures his whole face rather than cutting off the top and bottom of his face.
*The photographer definitely framed the photo amongst the face of the subject
